My journey through the Loretta Lynn’s Motocross program

Loretta Lynn’s MX is more than just a race; it’s a pivotal chapter in the story of motocross in America. Held annually at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, this event has become a rite of passage for amateur motocross riders, marking both a culmination of their hard work and a stepping stone to potential professional careers.

A Tradition of Excellence

Since its inception, Loretta Lynn’s has been renowned for its challenging conditions and prestigious reputation. The event attracts the best amateur riders from across the country, all vying for a chance to claim the coveted title. For many, it represents the pinnacle of amateur motocross—a platform where talent meets opportunity.

The Journey of a Racer

My personal journey with Loretta Lynn’s began in the late 1990s. Competing there in '98, '99, and 2000, I faced off against formidable competitors like Ivan Tedesco, Andrew Short, Kevin Johnson and others. Each year was a test of skill and perseverance, a chance to showcase my abilities on one of the sport's most challenging stages.

In 2011, my involvement with Loretta Lynn’s took on a new dimension when I joined KTM USA and helped establish the Orange Brigade. Transitioning from rider to mentor, I was privileged to work with a new generation of promising talent, including Dakota Alix, Ciaran Naran, Mitchell Falk and Hayden Deegan, among others. Supporting these young riders and witnessing their growth was an incredibly rewarding experience.

The Evolution of the Event

What sets Loretta Lynn’s apart is not just the competition, but the experience it offers. Under the stewardship of MX Sports and the Coombs family, the event has evolved from a mere gateway to professional careers into a celebration of motocross at all levels. While it may no longer serve as the sole path to a pro ride, it remains a significant milestone in the journey of many riders.

Advice for the Next Generation

To the racers and families preparing for this year’s event, my advice is simple: give everything you’ve got in every moto. The dedication you bring to the track will be your greatest asset. As Tim Cotter often says at the riders' meeting, you never know who might be watching. Cherish the experience, stay safe, and make the most of every moment. Loretta Lynn’s is more than a race—it’s a memorable journey that will stay with you for a lifetime.
