Mason's First Mtb Enduro

I fell in love with Mtb Enduro racing about 12 years ago and ironically that is right when Mason was born. There has been so much bike development that has changed the game for enduro mtb racing. Lighter bikes, 12 speed, electronic shifting and the proper geometry and trave to make climbing easy and descending even more fun. I have been taking Mason out on the trails almost two years but riding the trails and racing them are two different beasts. When Mason showed some interest in racing his mtb I knew the Rocky Trail Fox Superflow was the right event for him to start racing. The event sold out with over 640 entries over the two days and we barely got an entry up showing up for on the day registration so next time I will be pre entering.

This is one of the days when you have all the gear and no idea when it comes to Mason. He has ben riding his bike every day at home but not a ton of time on the trails so I was a little worried sending him down the blown out West Mt. Cotton trail network. I met up with my good friend Stu Cali who’s a local legend at this trail network so it would feel like just another day on the bike. After the hike up the steep fire road we got to the top of the hill where the stages started to find over 200 racers lined up to drop in to their stage of choice. Many would be best to wait but I saw this is as such a great thing as we could enjoy the moring slow it down and talk to the locals and catch up with people while we waitied to drop in.

I dropped into Stage 1 first so I could not worry about running Mason over if he fell and I felt good to be on the clock as it has been a long time since I was raced myself. Mason rolled into the finish of stage 1 with a rear flat from one of the chutes but I raced back to the van stuffed a 29er tube in his 275 wheel so we could continue on. We get to the to of Stage 2 I start again in front of Mason and two turns in I flat! I hit a rock with the front wheel and tear the bottom of the sidewall as well. I was like crap!!! I had no tires but Stu had a wheel for me to borrow so slapped that on kept rolling. Mason had two more successful stages and Mason re-ran stage 1 where he flatted and I re-ran stage 2. This is one of the great parts about Rocky Trail Superflow’s. You can run the trails as many times as you want to get you best time where a traditional Enduro it’s one run on each stage.

We finished up the stages and we were pretty cooked from the tire problems and hike a bikes up the fire road and wanted to get home to watch some Supercross so we called it a day and we loaded up. I had a 4 second gap on second in the 40+ class and 6th in Elite Men but there was a few hrs left of racing to go. Mason was 7th but the kids were also still racing so we were hoping our times held up with us going home. Mason dropped to 9th at the end of the race day out 20+ kids and I won the 40+ class by .01 after a rider went after me stage after stage trying to get me. How cool is that! That rider actually emailed me on this blog after searching me on google to say how rad the day was for him trying to chase me. That is what these events are all about and I can’t wait for the next one.

Mason had the best day and thanked me over and over on the way home so I plan on taking his squirley ass to more of these Rocky Trail Super flow’s. Below is some information to what we used on the day
