Brisbane to Gold Coast Road Ride
This past weekend, I had the privilege of participating in the Brisbane to Gold Coast ride alongside my sidekick, Jena Slavin. Despite the relentless rain, the experience was unforgettable and held special meaning for both of us.
Our day started at 2:45 a.m. when we met at Jena’s place. Her amazing husband, Ryan Slavin, drove us—Jena, Lee, and me—on the 50-minute journey to Brisbane. Just as we were about to leave at 3:15, we received a panic text from Lee, already crying about the weather. It set the tone for a day filled with laughter and camaraderie.
Jena and I tackled the 100 kilometers together, navigating from group to group as we made our way to the Gold Coast. The ride was a major fundraising effort for cancer research, a cause close to our hearts after losing our dads to cancer. As we pedaled through the storm, we were motivated by their memories, which fueled our determination.
I’m thrilled to share that the community came together and absolutely smashed the fundraising goal, raising more than $555,000 to support people living with cancer. That sense of collective achievement added an extra layer of meaning to our ride.
In the last 15 kilometers, I found myself pulling about 30 riders to the finish line. It may not have been the fastest or longest ride, but I took the lead into a headwind, pushing out 300+ watts. In those moments of discomfort, I reminded myself that this little bit of pain was nothing compared to what my dad and countless other cancer patients endured.
As we crossed the finish line, multiple riders thanked me for the pull, and I felt a deep sense of accomplishment. Despite the challenges, I finished this epic ride with a bit of punishment to myself, but it was all worth it.
I wholeheartedly recommend this ride to anyone, whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just starting out. It’s not just about the destination; it’s about the journey and the connections we make along the way. Despite the rain, the scenery was beautiful, and being part of such a meaningful cause made it all the more special.
