Navigating turns with hooks

The old saying corner for dough and jump shot show is used really loose and with a laugh at the end of the statement. If you want to be fast it’s the truth. You have to be good in your corners. In this installment of Answer Racing riding tip I will go through how to navigate turns with hooks.

A turn needs to be a smooth arc all the way through the turn, but when you have a soft pocket in the dirt or a unexperienced rider goes out on the track first a hook can develop in a turn. Like all turn and jumps you need to have a plan when approaching the turn.

  1. Set up your turn outside - in

  2. make sure your breaking is smooth on both front and back brakes.

  3. Transition to the seat applying pressure to the outside peg.

  4. Keep your knees tight to the bike squeezing tight.

  5. Keep your inside leg off the ground so it doesn’t hit the ground and stand you up mid way through the turn.

  6. Pick your head up keeping it in front of the bar pad looking ahead

  7. Apply the throttle smooth through the soft pocket “Hook”

  8. Once you are through the “hook” keep your head over the bars and drove your outside leg into the peg and accelerate hard to the next obstacle.


The above steps will help you navigate through turns with hooks or soft spots. Remember the smoother you are on the brakes and gas the better your bike will handle and the faster you will be. If you have a problem with the rear of your bike coming back around then you might need to add some high speed compression to your rear shock.
