The Big Loop Cycle Ride on the Gold Coast: A Journey Worth Every Pedal Stroke

Exploring the Big Loop Cycle Ride on the Gold Coast

As an avid cyclist always in search of new adventures, the Big Loop Cycle Ride on the Gold Coast was a ride I had wanted to do for quite some time but thankfully my good friend Lee Black put a group together to make me get out and see what everyone was talking about. . Renowned for its stunning scenery and challenging course, it proved to be a memorable experience from start to finish.

The Route

The Big Loop Cycle Ride offers a captivating mix of coastal vistas and lush hinterland, providing cyclists with a truly diverse landscape. My ride began at Emerald Lakes with fellow cyclists Lee Black, Steph Armstrong, Lane Moore, and Peter Kirk. We set off south through Nerang at 5:00am, passing the serene Hinze Dam—a peaceful stretch that allowed us to warm up and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the surroundings.

The route offers a few options: one takes you over Springbrook and down the infamous "Goat Track," known for its steep, exhilarating descent. I opted for a different route, which meandered southward before looping back. We went through Neramf below Beechmont and past Hinze Dam before reaching Chillingham. There, we stopped at the New South Wales border to regroup and enjoy a well-deserved coffee break.

Refreshed, we tackled the final major climb up Tomewin. Although Tomewin is a bit of a slog with its 5 kilometers and 500 meters of ascent, its short duration allows for a hard push without the risk of burning out. The climb was challenging but ultimately rewarding, providing a sense of accomplishment as we reached the top and crossed back into Queensland.

From Tomewin, the ride descends into Currumbin Valley. The terrain then shifts to rolling climbs that lead us back toward the coast. Once we hit the coastal highway, we coasted through Burleigh, Miami, and finally turned left in Broadbeach, leading us back to our starting point at Emerald Lakes. The journey showcased the Gold Coast’s varied terrain, blending coastal beauty with hinterland challenges.

Scenic Highlights

The Big Loop's scenic diversity is one of its standout features. Starting along the stunning coastline, cyclists are treated to expansive ocean views that set the tone for the ride. As the route moves inland, the landscape transforms into lush greenery and tranquil forested areas. Each segment offers a different perspective of the Gold Coast, making it a visual feast and a true pleasure for the soul. The Chillingham general store is a great stop to refill your bottles, grab fresh fruit, or enjoy a coffee for a quick caffeine boost.

Challenges and Triumphs

The ride presents a well-balanced mix of challenges, from moderate hills to flat stretches that allow for faster cruising. The varied terrain ensures that cyclists of different skill levels are tested while also having ample opportunities to enjoy the ride. Completing the Big Loop is a rewarding achievement, offering a sense of accomplishment and a deeper appreciation for the beautiful surroundings.

The Big Loop Cycle Ride is more than just a physical challenge; it’s an opportunity to immerse oneself in the beauty of the Gold Coast while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow cyclists.
