Finch Hatton Mountain Bike Park Review

Finch Hatton Mountain Bike Park Review: A Hidden Gem in Queensland

On my way home from the Masters UCI world champs in Cairns I decided to make the one hour drive west off the Bruce Highway to check out the first stage of the Finch Hatton Bike Park. I have been hearing about this public Mtb park built by Glen Jacob’s crew at World Trail. The first stage has 14.5 kilometres of epic flow trail, a pump track and is groomed and prepped weekly by the community. Nestled in the lush landscapes of Queensland, Finch Hatton Mountain Bike Park is quickly gaining traction among mountain biking enthusiasts. With its mix of technical challenges and scenic beauty, this park is shaping up to be a must-visit destination for riders of all skill levels.

Trails and Terrain: Finch Hatton offers a diverse array of trails that cater to a wide spectrum of riders. From beginner-friendly flow trails to steep, technical descents, there’s something for everyone. The trails are meticulously designed to blend technical features with smooth, fast sections, making each ride a well-rounded experience. The advanced trails, in particular, stand out with their rock gardens and tight switchbacks, providing a thrilling challenge for seasoned riders. I didn’t have much time on my side when I rode so utilised the Intense Tazer E- Bike where I was able to do 4 runs in just over an hr. The up trail is built amazing with great flow and the first stage of the trails has something for everyone. The pump track at Finch Hatton is unreal. Its massive size and great flow make for an exhilarating ride. I had the entire track to myself, which was a fantastic experience.

If I’d had my Intense DJ with me, I would have loved to be an old man tearing up the pump track, relishing every moment of its well-designed features. Overall, it’s a standout spot that offers an impressive and enjoyable experience for all riders.

Scenic Views: My trip was in and out but from what I’ve read on other reviews and scene on the drive is Finch Hatton’s biggest draws is its breathtaking scenery. As you pedal through the rainforest, you’re treated to stunning views of Finch Hatton Gorge and surrounding natural beauty. The park’s elevation changes offer panoramic vistas that make every climb worthwhile. Cape Hillsborough swimming hole is just an hour away from Finch Hatton, making it a perfect spot for a morning ride followed by an afternoon dip. Please note that this swimming hole is only accessible during low tide, so timing is essential.

From what I have read and researched to reach the spot, you’ll need to walk across Wedge Island, and it’s important to wear sturdy shoes due to sharp rocks in the area. Enjoy your adventure and stay safe!

Trail Conditions: Overall, the trails are in great condition, thanks to the dedicated efforts of local trail builders and volunteers. However, conditions can vary depending on recent weather, so be prepared for anything from muddy sections to dry, dusty trails. The park's commitment to maintenance is evident, with regularly groomed trails that keep the riding experience smooth.

Facilities: While Finch Hatton may not have the extensive facilities of larger bike parks, it covers the essentials well. Ample parking and basic amenities are available, though you might want to bring your own supplies, as services are somewhat limited. The absence of a full-service bike shop on-site could be a drawback for some, so plan ahead if you need specific gear or repairs.

Community Vibe: The local mountain biking community is welcoming and passionate. Events and races held at the park foster a strong sense of camaraderie among riders, adding to the overall experience. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you’re likely to find like-minded enthusiasts eager to share their love for the sport.

Final Verdict:

Finch Hatton Mountain Bike Park is truly a gem worth exploring. With its mix of challenging trails, breathtaking vistas, and a close-knit biking community, it offers an exceptional experience for riders of all levels.

If you’re within a 3-hour drive in central Queensland and seeking a new adventure, Finch Hatton should definitely be on your list. The current trail quality is excellent, though the extensive network of trails may make the travel distance feel less appealing for some. However, with the upcoming stages and additional trail openings, Finch Hatton is poised to become one of the top biking destinations in the country.

Overall, it’s a fantastic place for a road trip, and the future developments promise even more exciting riding opportunities.
