Cahuilla Creek Review

Cahuilla Creek is one of the last natural terrain Tracks in Southern California and just like most tracks it has had it’s trial and tribulations, but since the Minter family has taken over the facility about 5 years ago it has only gotten better each and every year. Cahuilla Creek is located on the Cahuilla Indian Reservation in the city of Anza, California in east Riverside County. What was once just one track has evolved into an amazing motorcycle park for all ages and skill levels with a beginner-kids track, Vet-novice track and intermediate-pro track, and just recently added the off-road park with over 30 miles of single track that continues to grow by the week. The soil at Cahuilla Creek is all DG “aka” decomposed granite and when prepped correctly it’s one of my favorite soils to ride. DG can hold an abundance of water and berms develop like sand berms that give you the allusion you are surfing. The Kids track doesn’t look like much to call home about but it is the only kids/beginner track that has elevation. This track isn’t prepped that often but to be honest it doesn’t need to be. First off the riders on this track don’t make the track rough and they keep the track surface hard pack so riders can easily learn the basics with out dealing with ruts or big bumps. There is a few nice little table tops and step down that my son loves to try and jump on his PW50. All in all this a great kids or true beginner track that I feel gives the riders the true value and meaning of a Motocross track.

The Vet/Novice track was put in about 5 years ago and it is almost as popular as the Main track these days. This track has multiple table tops, step ups, and step downs placed strategically through out the rolling hillside. This track is not prepped very deep which allows the track to develop multiple lines early and because it’s not prepped deep it doesn’t get that rough. Every turn on the track is in or out side friendly so making passes on your riding buddy is minor and most turns don’t have deep ruts if they have any at all so getting a flow around the track is easy.

If you want to add some mph and big jumps to your day all you have to do is head over to the Main track. The Main track is one of my favorite tracks in Southern California when prepped correctly. The track is extremely fast letting you see 4th gear wide open a few times and some big jumps for those riders looking for some good airtime. As of lately the crew has really refined the Main track making it flow a little more and getting the jumps faces more consistent. This track is very challenging when it come to line choices so the more advanced riders can make passes with ease using outside in line choices. One thing that I would like to see is the jump faces built a little better. Most jump faces have a double kicker on the lip so you have to make sure to be confident in your body position when hitting some of the larger jumps. Also the big triple step up in the back is very tough to clear and almost to inviting to the novice riders to try and jump. If you want to jump this its 4th gear tapped on a 450 to make the entire thing and 250 you will make it on top of the table.

What’s new? That is the off road loop. What was used for OEM’s to test on for years has developed into some first class single track laid out by the track owner Randy Minter. What was once one small loop has turned into 3 different loops with multiple rock features with go arounds. Sand sections and tight single track surrounded by Manzanita. Randy has been working on this a lot the last 6 months and we just cant wait for it to rain so we can turn it up on this amazing off road park. Another notable change will be when KTM gets the trail signs put in that will help keep everyone going the right direction, so if you happened to go check out the trail system before the signs are up the biggest rule is always go clockwise to avoid a head on collision.

So is Cahuilla Creek the right track for you? Yes I’m sure it is! There truly is something for every rider and with that being said it teaches riders how to be better riders each lap. A few notable things are that it can be windy and cold in the winter months with the elevation a little over 4,000 ft. Yup that’s right the air is a little thin so your small bore motorcycle will be a little down on power compared to sea level so you might even want to throw a tooth on the back sprocket. In the summer months the track can dry out quickly from the wind also so get up there early for fresh tracks.
