2017 Vet World Championship

They always say it’s way harder to defend then win the first time and I can finally attest to that this year for the 2017 Dubya Vet World Championships at Glen Helen. Last year I was more prepared then ever. Kurt Nicol and I raced 7 out of 10 weeks before the event. I was lean, fresh and excited. This year haha not the case! I dislocated my shoulder in June and was just trying to get through the summers testing program unscaved. My Wife and I put on a charity bike ride the week before and I just about looped out more then a few times at the Red Bull Straight Rhythm two weeks prior. No these are not excuses it’s my story.

It’s no secret Glen Helen is in my backyard and I’m very fond of the track. My KTM USA 350sxf was set up impeccable for the event after I left Friday practice and I was really looking forward to battling with the likes of Mike Brown, Brett Metcalf and Jason Potter who I expected to be up front. On the way out to the track Sunday it began to rain and I was like well here we go! I’m not the best mud rider that’s for sure. It was a steady drizzle all practice but it didn’t really rain until the first moto and just minutes before the first moto it began to come down very hard. I got a descent start coming out in 5th but a few poor races decisions and being way to cautios in the mud got me shuffled back to like 9th. I knew I had some work to do so I started pushing hard but after I pulled the last film of my 100% roll offs I ended up a disappointing 6th. Brett Metcalf, Mike Brown, and Jason Potter rounded out the top 3.

The race wasn't the only part of the day that was tough. All the riders rode with a heavy heart on this day. just days before we lost Tom White to cancer. There isn't much you can't say about Tom. He was a Man's Man and I have spoken to hime so many times at Glen Helen after a win or loss but he always tought me something. My thoughts and prayers go out to Tom Whites Family and close friends in these trying times. RIP Tom you will for ever be missed!
